Criteria for Inclusion
The Office of the University Registrar is in the process of updating the Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM) forms to align with KU Core 34. The University Core Curriculum Committee will begin accepting nominations for including a course in the KU Core 34 curriculum in fall 2024.
The UCCC has identified criteria departments must follow for courses to be considered for inclusion in KU Core 34. These criteria ensure KU complies with the KBOR systemwide general education requirements and the effective and systematic assessment of student learning and KU Core 34, the general education curriculum.
Requirements
Courses must be at the 300 level or below.
Courses must align with the subject areas designated by KBOR for each goal.
Courses can only be cross listed within KBOR discipline areas, with the exception of the institutionally designated areas.
Courses from professional schools may not be included in the KU Core 34 with the exception of statewide transfer courses and courses in the School of Music.
All statewide transfer courses that are included in the KU Core 34 must exist in their KBOR defined discipline areas.
All courses must be taken for a minimum of 3 credit hours with the exception of lab courses, which can be taken for 1 credit hour.
Courses must be offered in the first 2 years of a program of study or are otherwise foundational.
Courses must be offered at least every other year with a long-term plan for sustaining course offerings and instructors available to teach the course on its cycle.
Courses must be open to all students regardless of major.
Course syllabi must include KU Core 34 Goal learning outcomes and criteria.
Part of successful outcomes in a KU Core 34 course is whether students successfully complete these foundational courses. Units must report their Drop, Fail, Withdrawal (DFW) rates and provide context or identify strategies for ensuring student success.
Courses seeking to be included in the KU Core 34 must submit complete nomination materials through the Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM) system – including those previously approved for the KU Core.
At recertification, courses must be prepared to address all KU Core 34 inclusion requirements.
Courses must identify a signature assignment, shared across all sections, that can be used to assess student learning by the University Assessment Committee.
Courses must use Canvas, the institution’s learning management system, at a minimum to submit a signature assignment.
