Students who enroll in study abroad courses that do not satisfy the KU Core 34 Global Culture goal can seek to have their experience abroad satisfy the Global Culture goal by submitting an Individual Student Designed Experience (see below) proposal to the University Core Curriculum Committee (UCCC). This form must be submitted to and approved by the UCCC prior to the start of the experience.

The Global Culture goal can be met through a pre-approved experience. Students may identify and propose a unique experience for pre-approval by the University Core Curriculum Committee. Types of experiences that have been approved by the UCCC are study abroad experiences not operated through KU’s Study Abroad and Global Engagement Office and internships/research experiences that do not align with a course. Below are the steps students should take to propose an experience to the UCCC. Note all experiences must be submitted to and approved by the UCCC prior to the student's departure.

  1. Identify an experience that you believe satisfies a KU Core 34 Global Culture goal.

  1. Meet with your academic advisor or a study abroad advisor to determine if submitting a proposal to the UCCC is the best option.

  1. Submit a proposal to the UCCC if your experience is not already approved and/or if a current Global Culture course doesn't align with the experience.

  1. Review the form and consider your answers to the questions. We recommend you review this sample form prior to submitting your proposal.

  1. Complete this proposal form

  1. Upload a letter of support from your advisor, faculty sponsor, or experience supervisor.

  1. Upload any other supporting documentation such as a position description, program goals, syllabus, or documents that further explain the experience.

  1. The University Core Curriculum Committee will review your proposal. If approved, a representative from the UCCC will contact you with more information about enrolling in UNIV 342, a 3-credit hour asynchronous course.

  1. You’ll be added to the UNIV 342 Canvas site where you will complete assignments before, during, and after the experience.

  1. Upon completion of the coursework, you’ll be charged a $50 administration fee (subject to increase) to post 3 credit hours of UNIV 342 to your transcript.
