Math Pathways

Starting Fall 2026: Math Pathways at KU

Students will complete the math course that aligns with the learning outcomes and requirements of their major. For example, MATH 101: College Algebra will only be required for majors that specifically need it. For other majors, students will complete:

  • MATH 105: Quantitative Reasoning

    or

  • MATH 107: Introductory Statistics

Here is the list of the math pathway course required by each major.

Math Pathways courses will be required for all new first-time freshmen enrolling in any public 2- or 4-year Kansas college or university in fall 2026.

Why Math Pathways?

Data from the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) and the Mathematical Association of America indicates mathematics courses are a common obstacle to college graduation. Currently, college algebra is required for the majority of majors regardless of their discipline. Math Pathways allows majors to align their required math course with their major coursework.

To address this, KBOR partnered with the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin through the Launch Years Initiative. This program is designed create clear pathways from high school to college and into careers.

Math Pathways Courses

At KU, the three gateway math pathways courses are:

  • MATH 101: College Algebra
  • MATH 105: Quantitative Reasoning
  • MATH 107: Introductory Statistics

Pilot Program at KU

KU will pilot math pathways in Fall 2025 with a select group of students. A full implementation will occur in Fall 2026 with all first-year students.

Corequisite Courses

The pilot program and full implementation of Math Pathways will include the addition of corequisite Math courses.

Enrollment in corequisite support courses will be determined by such measures as ACT scores, high school GPA, high school course grades, and placement tests. Some students will be required to enroll in sections with corequisites, and all freshmen may opt to take a corequisite for additional support.

More details about corequisite courses are available here.

Stay Updated

KU is finalizing the plan for Math Pathways and will share updates here as they become available.
