Math Pathways
Data from the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) and the Mathematical Association of America indicate mathematics courses are the biggest challenge that prevents students from completing their degrees. Currently, college algebra is required for the majority of majors regardless of their discipline.
As such, Kansas Board of Regents began working with the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin to reduce the barriers toward degree completion through participation in the Launch Years Initiative. This program is designed to create math pathways that guide students from high school through college into their careers.
Beginning in Fall 2026, there will be three math pathways courses: Introductory Statistics, Quantitative Reasoning, and College Algebra. Students will complete the course that aligns with the learning outcomes of their majors.
A group of math faculty from across KBOR institutions were involved in the decision making process. At KU, the three gateway math pathways courses are:
- MATH 101: College Algebra
- MATH 105: Quantitative Reasoning
- MATH 107: Introductory Statistics
This list shows the math pathways course by academic program.
KU will pilot math pathways in Fall 2025 with a select group of students. A full implementation will occur in Fall 2026 with all first-year students.
KU is continuing to develop the plan for implementation of Math Pathways. This page will be updated as more details become available.
