Strengthen Oral Communication

Communicating with others, both in writing and orally, lies at the heart of personal and professional growth and success. The ability to engage with diverse audiences and ideas in writing and speaking supports personal relationships, educational development, professional advancement, and civic engagement. Using language flexibly and confidently supports critical and integrative thinking by allowing students to generate and examine fully their ideas and engage with multiple perspectives. 

Required Credit Hours: 3 

Courses that satisfy the goal:

  • COMS 130: Public Speaking 
  • COMS 131: Public Speaking, Honors 
  • COMS 244: Introduction to Interpersonal Communication Theory 
  • COMS 322: Professional Public Speaking 

Additional options for achieving the goal: 

  • High School Speech:  Students with two high school courses in speech (totaling two semesters) with a grade of B or higher will receive course credit for the communications learning outcome. Students who believe they qualify for this exemption should complete the form at this link to petition the exemption: Goal 2.2 Exemption Petition. There is a $50 fee associated with posting the credit. Please note: debate and forensics courses will not be considered for students entering in Fall 2020 or after.
