KU Core 34 Goals & Institutional Learning Goals
The goals and outcomes of KU Core 34, KU's general education curriculum, are aligned with the University’s Institutional Learning Goals (ILGs).
English/Written Communication
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to explore their own experiences and relevant sources of evidence in order to generate, organize, and convey ideas in writing, using language and media to clearly, confidently, and appropriately present those ideas to a wide variety of audiences and for different institutional, historical, and/or public contexts.
Institutional Learning Goal:
Effective Communication - Articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in a range of contexts using a variety of means and modalities.
Communication
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to critically generate, develop, organize, and orally convey relevant messages appropriate to the situation, using effective language and supporting material, presentation skills, and other media to deliver an audience-centered message in a clear, compelling, and confident manner.
Institutional Learning Goal:
Effective Communication - Articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively in a range of contexts using a variety of means and modalities.
Math & Statistics
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to define a problem, analyze numerical information, apply mathematical principles, and integrate quantitative methods into problem solving.
Institutional Learning Goal:
Analytical reasoning - Access, evaluate, and use qualitative and/or quantitative information to identify patterns, formulate and support interpretations.
Natural & Physical Sciences
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to leverage sources, methods, and arguments in the natural and physical sciences to deepen their understanding of, critically question, and effectively apply knowledge within these disciplines’ foundational ideas. Examples of relevant skills and learning might include laboratory methods, interpreting observations, statistical analysis and data modeling, the scientific method, or quantitative reasoning.

Creative Inquiry and Discovery - Apply cognitive skills and a broad array of knowledge to promote inquiry, discover solutions, and generate new ideas and creative works.
Social & Behavioral Sciences
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to leverage sources, methods, and arguments in the social and behavioral sciences to deepen their understanding of, critically question, and effectively apply knowledge within these disciplines’ foundational ideas. Examples of relevant skills and learning might include knowledge and analysis of social and behavioral processes, quantitative and qualitative analysis, or the interpretation of various types of data.

Arts & Humanities
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to leverage sources, methods, and arguments in the arts and humanities to deepen their understanding of, critically question, and effectively apply knowledge within these disciplines’ foundational ideas. Examples of relevant skills and learning might include engaging with a wide array of critical frameworks, perspectives, and styles; evaluating historical, creative, and cultural narratives, performance, and other forms of artistic expression and exploration of the philosophical, cultural, archival, and stylistic underpinnings of these forms of expression.

Social Responsibility & Ethics
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to identify universal and/or discipline-specific ethical challenges, critically analyze and discuss the application of relevant ethical codes, evaluate the ramifications of their and others' actions, and articulate their position within an ethical dilemma.
Institutional Learning Goal:
Ethical & Professional Responsibility - Demonstrate integrity and act responsibility with the interest of the larger community, environment, discipline, or profession in mind.
US Culture
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to investigate and examine cultures within the United States, considering how social identities such as age, ability, culture, language, class, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, ethnicity, indigeneity, and/or race, as well as their related social structures, have shaped and continue to shape cultures and human experiences within the United States.
Institutional Learning Goal:
Social Awareness & Cultural Understanding - Develop a critical and reflective awareness of social, global, and cultural differences (including ability, language, class, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, ethnicity, indigeneity, and/or race)
Global Culture
KU Core 34 Learning Outcome:
Upon reaching this goal, students will be able to identify and examine cultural perspectives outside of the United States, recognize and develop an awareness of their identity within the global community, and interact respectfully with a variety of cultures.
