Goal Compatibility

A course may be approved for more than one goal or learning outcome in the KU Core.  However, some goals or learning outcomes are incompatible with others. During 2012-13, the University Core Curriculum Committee developed the following understandings of such conflicts.

  1. Goal 1, learning outcome 2, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) the learning outcomes of Goals 2, 4, and 5. It is thus unlikely that a unit approved for Goal 1, learning outcome 2, could also fulfill learning outcomes associated with Goals 2, 4, and 5.
  2. Goal 2, learning outcome 1, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; Goal 2, learning outcome 2; and Goal 5, learning outcome 2.
  3. Goal 2, learning outcome 2, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; Goal 2, learning outcome 1; Goal 4; and Goal 5, learning outcome 2.
  4. Because Goal 3 is one of the General Education goals (first three goals), it seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 6, one of the Advanced Education goals (last three goals).
  5. Goal 4, learning outcome 1, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; and Goal 4, learning outcome 2.
  6. Goal 4, learning outcome 2, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; and Goal 4, learning outcome 1.
  7. Goal 5, learning outcome 1, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; and Goal 5, learning outcome 2.
  8. Goal 5, learning outcome 2, seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 1, learning outcome 2; Goal 2, learning outcome 1; Goal 2, learning outcome 2; Goal 3; and Goal 5, learning outcome 1.
  9. Because Goal 6 is one of the Advanced Education goals (last three goals), it seems incompatible with (at a minimum) Goal 3 of the General Education goals (first three goals).
