Experiences

The KU Core 34 Curriculum allows students to earn course credit for the US and Global Culture goals outside of the classroom by completing a coordinated educational experience.

Study Abroad Experience

The Global Culture goal of the KU Core 34 and course credit may be earned by completing a significant study abroad experience, defined as an experience of a semester or year duration or an approved short-term program.

Proposing Your Own Experience

The US & Global Culture goals can be met through a pre-approved experience. Students may identify and propose a unique experience for pre-approval by the University Core Curriculum Committee.  Types of experiences that have been approved by the UCCC are study abroad experiences not operated through KU’s Study Abroad and Global Engagement Office and internships/research experiences that do not align with a course.

The UCCC utilizes international standards of experiential learning to ensure student learning occurs and to evaluate the quality of the experience. Therefore, proposed experiences must include: goals, plans for routinely reflecting on the experience and adjusting goals/expectations throughout the duration, and a process for evaluating your learning and its applicability to your academic and/or career goals.

You must submit your proposal in advance of the experience. KU Core 34 credit will not be awarded for individual experiences that have already occurred.

How to Propose an Educational Experience to UCCC for review

  1. Identify an experience that you believe satisfies a KU Core 34 Goal (only US and Global Culture apply).

  1. Meet with your academic advisor or a study abroad advisor to determine if submitting a proposal to the UCCC is the best option.

  1. Submit a proposal to the UCCC if your experience is not already approved and/or if a US or Global Culture course doesn't align with the experience.

  1. Review the form and consider your answers to the questions. We recommend you review this sample form prior to submitting your proposal.
